East Cheshire Ladies League finals

The East Cheshire Ladies Golf League features hundreds of players enjoying competitive match-play golf against other clubs throughout the Spring and Summer months

There are four competitions- Business Ladies, A, B and Plate teams which are set up in handicap order.

The aim is to get through to finals day to become the East Cheshire champions in your competition and then play against their West Cheshire equivalents to win the County Trophies at the magnificent venue of Delamere Forest GC.

The host club for the finals were Astbury GC and they received universal compliments for the outstanding quality of their scenic course backed by terrific and friendly clubhouse hospitality and support.

The finals opened on the Saturday with the Business Ladies final featuring Marple against local rivals Hazel Grove and a close contest was won 2-1 by the Hazel Grove trio of Kara Powell, Fiona Gradidge and Andrea Haynes.

Two days later in wall-to-wall sunshine there were the other three finals led out by the A teams of Bramall Park and Tytherington.

There was some top class golf from both teams and again there was little between them with Bramall Park delighted to win 3-2 with victories from Donna McIntosh, Jan Cowan and Judith Wheatley taking them across the line.

The B team match again saw Tytherington in action in another excellent contest with Alsager.

It was neck and neck with Tytherington leading 3-2 going into the final two games and keeping their nerve to take Alsager across the finishing line to a thrilling 4-3 victory were Mary Hobson and Pam Neale.

The final match for the Plate saw Sale and Marple in another thriller which went to the final match on the 20th hole with the teams locked at 3-3.

Sale's Mary Roper was level with Linda Field from Marple after 18 holes but managed to secure victory for her delighted team and their supporters on the second extra hole to complete a day of golf bringing great credit to all of the players for their great etiquette and friendliness as well as some thrilling golf.

On a memorable finals day the organisers and all at Astbury got deserved credit for their hard work on the day and throughout a long and sometimes difficult season with such variable weather.

It was a great advert for ladies golf in the region in all aspects from start to finish

Plate runners up Marple ltr Kay Weeks, Kay Gould-Martin, Pauline Davies, Linda Rogers, Linda Field, Karen Buchanan, Kathy Wilkinson.
